PMP
Project Management Professional — the world’s most recognised project management certification, awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and held by over 700,000 professionals across every industry globally.
What is the PMP Certification?
The Project Management Professional (PMP) is a globally recognised certification awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It validates a practitioner’s competency in leading and directing projects — covering predictive (Waterfall), agile, and hybrid delivery approaches. The PMP is not industry-specific: it is equally valued in construction, IT, finance, healthcare, and government.
In Jamaica, PMP certification is increasingly required for senior project management roles across the public and private sectors. Government agencies including the National Water Commission (NWC), Urban Development Corporation (UDC), and ministries delivering IDB and World Bank-funded projects actively preference PMP-certified candidates. In the private sector, it is a near-mandatory credential for senior PM roles in construction, banking, and telecommunications.

Frequently Asked Questions — PMP in Jamaica
Can I sit the PMP exam in Jamaica?
Yes. The PMP exam is available through Pearson VUE test centres in Kingston, or online via remote proctoring from any location in Jamaica with a reliable internet connection and a suitable environment (quiet room, no dual monitors, government-issued ID).
How much does PMP certification cost in Jamaica?
PMI membership costs approximately USD 139/year. Exam fees are USD 405 for non-members and USD 284 for PMI members. Training courses vary widely — from USD 200 for online self-paced courses to USD 1,500+ for instructor-led programmes. Costs are paid in USD. Jamaica candidates should factor in exchange rate variability.
Is the PMP more useful than an MBA in Jamaica?
They serve different purposes. An MBA provides broad business strategy education. The PMP is a targeted professional certification that directly validates project management competency and is widely referenced in job specifications. Many Jamaica professionals pursue both. If your career is specifically in project delivery, PMP typically has higher immediate return on investment.
What is the PDU requirement to maintain PMP certification?
You must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every 3 years. At least 8 PDUs must come from each of three categories: Technical PM, Leadership, and Strategic Business Management (the PMI Talent Triangle). Many webinars, online courses, and PMI chapter events count towards PDUs.
Is there a PMI chapter in Jamaica?
There is no dedicated PMI Jamaica chapter at present. Caribbean-based PMP holders typically engage with the PMI Caribbean Chapter, which covers the wider region and offers events, webinars, and networking opportunities relevant to Jamaica members.
