Career Pathway to MRICS
Accredited Degree
Complete a RICS-accredited BSc — UTech BSc Quantity Surveying is the primary Jamaica route. UWI and overseas programmes also accepted.
GradRICS / AssocRICS Entry
On graduation, register as a Graduate member (GradRICS). Non-cognate graduates enter via the Associate Assessment (AssocRICS) route.
Structured Training (APC) — 24 Months
Work under an MRICS-qualified supervisor, completing a structured diary and 12 mandatory competencies covering measurements, contracts, ethics, and client care.
APC Final Assessment
Submit a critical analysis and attend a panel interview with RICS assessors. Assessments are held globally, including virtual for Caribbean candidates.
MRICS Achieved
Use the post-nominal designation. Maintain 20 hours of CPD annually. Progress to FRICS (Fellow) with additional experience and contribution.

How to Obtain MRICS — Step by Step
Complete an RICS-accredited degree
UTech’s BSc Quantity Surveying holds RICS accreditation. Confirm accreditation status with the institution before enrolling, as programmes are periodically re-assessed.
Register with RICS as a Graduate member
Join RICS online after graduation. Annual membership fees apply. Graduate status allows you to begin the APC structured training.
Secure an employer with an MRICS supervisor
Your APC requires a qualified MRICS supervisor at your workplace. NHT, valuations firms, and major QS practices in Jamaica offer APC-supported roles.
Complete 24 months of structured APC training
Log experience across mandatory and optional competency areas. Maintain a structured diary and attend RICS APC counsellor meetings.
Submit your critical analysis and attend the final assessment
A written critical analysis (3,000 words) and a 1-hour panel interview. Caribbean candidates can attend virtually or travel to the nearest assessment centre.
Maintain your designation with CPD
20 hours of CPD per year is mandatory. RICS offers online learning, webinars, and regional events. Non-compliance results in suspension.

Is UTech’s Quantity Surveying degree RICS-accredited?
Yes. The University of Technology Jamaica’s BSc Quantity Surveying holds RICS accreditation, making it the primary local route to MRICS. Always verify current accreditation status directly with RICS and UTech before enrolling.
Can I pursue MRICS if I studied in Jamaica but my degree is not RICS-accredited?
Yes, via the Experience Pathway. RICS assesses your practical experience and competencies directly. You will need a minimum number of years in relevant practice and must still pass the APC final assessment.
Are MRICS assessments available in Jamaica?
Currently the nearest in-person assessment centre is in Trinidad or the UK. RICS has offered virtual final assessments for Caribbean candidates. Check the RICS Caribbean office for current scheduling.

Registration with the Valuers Council of Jamaica is a statutory requirement to practise as a valuer in Jamaica. MRICS is an additional international credential that signals higher professional standing. Many senior valuers hold both.
