Why CSPO Matters in Jamaica
Jamaica’s technology and digital product landscape has shifted dramatically toward product-led development. Where traditional project management asked “when will it be done?” modern product development asks “what should we build next — and why?” The Certified Scrum Product Owner is the professional who answers that question. CSPO holders define the product vision, manage the backlog, and ensure every sprint delivers maximum value to the business and its customers.
Jamaica’s fintech sector — encompassing companies like NCB’s digital banking platform, Sagicor’s digital insurance products, and a growing number of independent Jamaican fintech startups — has moved fully to Scrum and related Agile frameworks. Product Owners at these organisations bear responsibility for defining the features that differentiate their products in an increasingly competitive market. The CSPO credential validates that a professional has the frameworks, vocabulary, and practical skills to perform this role effectively.
Digicel Digital’s product teams, FLOW’s digital services, and Jamaica’s BPO digital transformation units have all adopted Agile methodologies as their standard operating model. CSPO holders in these organisations translate customer research, market data, and strategic priorities into ordered product backlogs that guide development teams sprint by sprint. Without effective Product Owners, even the best development teams build the wrong things.
One of the CSPO’s strongest advantages in Jamaica’s market is its accessibility. Unlike many senior certifications that require years of qualifying experience, the CSPO requires only a 2-day mandatory live training. This makes it the fastest path for ambitious Jamaican professionals — from business analysts, project managers, and product managers to marketing professionals and entrepreneurs — to gain a credentialed Agile product role. The CSPO pairs naturally with PSM I (Professional Scrum Master) to build a complete Scrum leadership team.

How to Obtain Your CSPO — Step by Step
CSPO certification is unique in that it requires attending a 2-day training led specifically by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). You cannot self-study and sit an independent exam — the live training is mandatory. Scrum Alliance maintains a global directory of CSTs at scrumalliance.org. Many CSTs now offer fully virtual 2-day CSPO courses accessible to Jamaican professionals from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Live virtual courses typically run over 2 consecutive days or split across 4 half-days.
The 2-day CSPO training is interactive and hands-on — not a lecture. You will work through exercises covering Scrum fundamentals, Product Owner accountabilities, backlog management, user story creation, sprint planning, stakeholder communication, and value-driven development. Bring your actual product challenges if you have them — good CSTs use real scenarios from participants. The training costs typically range from USD $1,200–$1,800 per person for virtual courses.
After completing the training, your CST will register you with Scrum Alliance and you will receive an email to create your Scrum Alliance account. Scrum Alliance then requires you to complete a brief online assessment covering Scrum and Product Owner knowledge — this is straightforward for candidates who engaged fully in the training. The assessment is not a formal high-stakes exam; it is a knowledge check to confirm training engagement.
To receive your CSPO certification, you must accept Scrum Alliance’s License Agreement, which includes commitments to Agile and Scrum values, ethical practice, and ongoing professional development. This is completed online via your Scrum Alliance member portal.
Upon completing the assessment and accepting the agreement, Scrum Alliance issues your digital CSPO certificate and badge. Your certification is immediately verifiable via the Scrum Alliance online directory — employers can confirm your CSPO status in real-time. You may now add CSPO to your LinkedIn profile, CV, and business card. Your 2-year certification period begins immediately.
CSPO certification must be renewed every 2 years by completing 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs). SEUs are earned through attending Scrum events, completing online Scrum courses, contributing to the Agile community, or pursuing advanced Scrum Alliance certifications (such as A-CSPO — Advanced CSPO). Renewal also requires a USD $100 renewal fee to Scrum Alliance.
CPD & Renewal — CSPO
CSPO certification is valid for 2 years. Renewal requires 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and a renewal fee. SEU activities that Jamaican professionals can access include:
- Attending Agile or Scrum conferences (Global Scrum Gathering, Agile Alliance events — available virtually)
- Completing online Scrum and Agile courses (Scrum Alliance eLearning, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning)
- Mentoring other Scrum practitioners or delivering Agile training within your organisation
- Writing blog posts, articles, or case studies about Agile and Product Ownership
- Pursuing the A-CSPO (Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner) — which earns SEUs and upgrades your designation
- Participating in local Agile community events and meetups (increasingly active in Kingston’s tech community)
Professionals who do not renew on time have their certification lapse. Scrum Alliance permits reinstatement by completing the SEU requirement and paying a reinstatement fee — but it is far simpler to maintain the certification actively throughout the 2-year cycle.
