CA (ICAJ)
Chartered Accountant via the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica — the premier local accounting designation for public practice, audit, and senior finance roles in Jamaica.
What is CA (ICAJ)?
The Chartered Accountant (CA) designation awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ) is Jamaica’s premier professional accounting qualification. Established in 1965, ICAJ is the statutory body that regulates the accounting profession in Jamaica under the Public Accountancy Act. The CA programme encompasses Foundation and Professional level examinations covering financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, law, and ethics. Candidates must complete a supervised training contract at an ICAJ-registered firm and demonstrate the professional competence required to serve Jamaica’s public and private sectors.
ICAJ registration is the statutory requirement to sign audit reports and practise as a public accountant in Jamaica under the Companies Act and the Public Accountancy Act. Without ICAJ registration, no individual or firm may legally conduct statutory audits of Jamaican companies. Many of Jamaica’s most senior finance professionals — Chief Financial Officers and Finance Directors at major corporations including NCB Financial Group, Sagicor, GraceKennedy, and Seprod — hold the ICAJ CA designation, often in combination with international qualifications such as ACCA. ICAJ also holds mutual recognition with ICAEW (the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales), facilitating professional mobility for Jamaican CAs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ICAJ CA the same as ACCA?
No. The ICAJ CA is Jamaica’s statutory local designation for public accounting practice and audit. ACCA is an internationally portable qualification recognised in 180+ countries. They are complementary — many senior Jamaican professionals hold both, with ICAJ CA enabling statutory audit work in Jamaica and ACCA providing international recognition.
Can ICAJ members audit public companies in Jamaica?
Yes. ICAJ CA holders in good standing are registered as public accountants under the Public Accountancy Act and are legally authorised to sign statutory audit reports for Jamaican companies. This is a right not available to holders of international qualifications alone.
Does ICAJ have mutual recognition agreements?
Yes. ICAJ has a mutual recognition agreement with ICAEW (the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) and maintains Caribbean regional agreements. This allows qualified ICAJ CAs to gain recognition in certain other jurisdictions with reduced examination requirements.
How long does the ICAJ CA take to complete?
Typically 4–6 years from commencement, including the time to complete Foundation and Professional level examinations and the mandatory 3-year training contract at an ICAJ-registered firm.
Which universities in Jamaica are recognised by ICAJ?
ICAJ recognises accounting and finance degrees from UTech (University of Technology Jamaica), UWI (University of the West Indies), NCU (Northern Caribbean University), and other approved institutions. Candidates should confirm recognition with ICAJ before enrolment.
