CIMA
Chartered Institute of Management Accountants — the world’s largest professional body for management accountants, focused on business strategy, decision support, and performance management.
What is CIMA?
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is the world’s largest professional body for management accountants, with over 227,000 members and students in more than 150 countries. Unlike ACCA or the ICAJ CA — which have a significant audit and public practice focus — CIMA concentrates on management accounting: costing, budgeting, financial strategy, business performance management, and decision support for internal business leadership. The CIMA qualification is structured across four levels: Certificate, Operational, Management, and Strategic, comprising 16 papers in total. Candidates who complete all levels and meet the experience requirement are awarded the CGMA (Chartered Global Management Accountant) designation, jointly awarded with the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).
In Jamaica, CIMA is particularly valued by companies in the manufacturing, distribution, retail, and hospitality sectors, where cost control, operational efficiency, and strategic financial planning are critical. Employers such as Carib Cement, Seprod Group, GraceKennedy, Wisynco Group, and Sandals Resorts seek CIMA-qualified professionals to lead financial planning and analysis functions. CIMA graduates from UTech and UWI accounting programmes are typically eligible for exemptions at entry levels, reducing the number of papers required to complete the qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions
CIMA vs ACCA — which is better for Jamaica?
The choice depends on your career goals. ACCA provides broader coverage including audit and public practice and is more internationally portable. CIMA is the better choice for professionals seeking roles in industry — cost management, financial planning and analysis, and strategic decision support within commercial organisations. Many Jamaican professionals pursue CIMA for industry roles and ACCA for public practice or international mobility.
Can CIMA members sign audit reports in Jamaica?
No. CIMA is a management accounting qualification focused on business decision support, not audit and assurance. To sign statutory audit reports in Jamaica, you must be registered with ICAJ as a public accountant. Professionals wishing to conduct statutory audits should pursue the ICAJ CA or ACCA with an audit pathway.
Is CIMA recognised by Jamaica employers?
Yes. CIMA is well-recognised by Jamaica’s manufacturing, distribution, hospitality, and financial services sectors. Employers such as Carib Cement, Seprod, GraceKennedy, Sandals Resorts, and Digicel Jamaica value CIMA-qualified candidates for their strategic finance and cost management capabilities.
What is the CGMA designation?
CGMA stands for Chartered Global Management Accountant. It is a joint designation awarded by CIMA and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) to qualified management accountants who have completed the CIMA programme and met the experience requirements. It is one of the most widely held management accounting credentials globally.
How long does CIMA take to complete?
Typically 3–5 years for candidates starting at the Certificate level. Accounting degree holders claiming exemptions can reduce this to 2–4 years. The qualification can be completed while working full time, as exams are available on demand throughout the year for objective test papers.
