CFA
Chartered Financial Analyst — the most rigorous and respected credential in investment management and financial analysis, awarded by the CFA Institute to just 190,000+ charterholders globally.
What is CFA?
The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, awarded by the CFA Institute (USA), is the gold standard for investment professionals worldwide. The programme comprises three progressively demanding examination levels covering a comprehensive curriculum: ethics and professional standards, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate issuers, equity investments, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments, and portfolio management and wealth planning. Only approximately 40% of candidates pass each level, and earning the charter typically requires 4–5 years of dedicated study alongside relevant investment experience. With fewer than 190,000 charterholders globally, the CFA designation signals exceptional analytical rigour and professional commitment.
In Jamaica, CFA charterholders are highly sought after and command premium salaries in a market where qualified investment professionals remain scarce. Barita Investments, JMMB Group, NCB Capital Markets, Sagicor Investments, and Proven Investments — all managing significant securities portfolios and growing their wealth management divisions — actively recruit CFA-level analysts and portfolio managers. The Financial Services Commission (FSC), which regulates Jamaica’s securities market, and the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) Research and Economic Policy Department also employ CFA-qualified analysts for regulatory oversight and macroeconomic analysis. Given the limited supply of CFA charterholders in Jamaica, qualified candidates have substantial negotiating leverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How difficult is the CFA exam?
The CFA programme is widely regarded as one of the most demanding professional qualifications in finance. Pass rates average approximately 40% at each level, and the CFA Institute recommends 300+ hours of study per level. Consistent, disciplined study over several years is required. The pass rates mean that a significant number of candidates repeat levels before progressing.
Can I sit CFA exams in Jamaica?
CFA Institute currently offers computer-based testing at authorised centres. Candidates should check cfainstitute.org for the most current list of test centre locations, including any Kingston-based options, and whether remote online proctoring is available for their exam level and sitting date.
Is CFA useful outside investment management in Jamaica?
Yes. While CFA is most valued in investment management and securities analysis, Jamaica’s banking sector, the FSC, the BOJ, corporate treasury departments, and risk management functions also recognise and reward CFA-level analytical skills. The rigorous financial modelling and ethics training benefit professionals across the finance industry.
How is CFA different from an MBA in finance?
The CFA focuses narrowly and deeply on investment analysis, portfolio management, and financial ethics — it is a practitioner credential. An MBA in finance provides broader business management training including strategy, leadership, and operations. In Jamaica’s investment sector, the CFA is generally more valued for analytical and portfolio roles, while an MBA may be preferred for general management positions.
How many CFA charterholders are there in Jamaica?
The number of CFA charterholders in Jamaica is small relative to demand — likely fewer than a few hundred qualified charterholders. This scarcity gives CFA-qualified professionals significant negotiating leverage with employers such as Barita Investments, JMMB, NCB Capital Markets, Sagicor Investments, and Proven Investments.
