Teacher Salaries in Jamaica 2025: What You Really Earn

Teaching remains one of the most common professional careers in Jamaica, employing tens of thousands of Jamaicans across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. But teacher pay has been a source of longstanding frustration — Jamaica’s educators are consistently recruited abroad, particularly to the UK and the USA, where salaries are dramatically higher. This guide sets out what teachers actually earn at each level in Jamaica’s public school system, and what the total compensation package looks like when benefits are included.

Public Sector Teacher Salaries (Ministry of Education)

Government school teachers are paid on the Government of Jamaica salary scale administered through the Ministry of Finance. Teacher grades are linked to qualification level:

Benefits and Allowances

Government teachers receive a number of benefits beyond base salary:

• Pension: Teachers employed before 2016 are on the defined benefit pension scheme — one of the more valuable government benefits. Post-2016 entrants are on a defined contribution scheme.
• Vacation leave: 6–8 weeks annually, in addition to school holidays
• Study leave: Available for further professional development
• NHT contributions: Both employee (2%) and employer (3%) contributions from the Ministry of Education
• Uniform allowance: A small annual clothing allowance

Private School Salaries

Private schools in Jamaica set their own salary scales. Well-established preparatory schools and independent secondary schools typically pay 10–25% above government rates, and some include additional benefits such as health insurance and school fee concessions for teachers’ children. However, private schools do not offer government pension benefits.

Tertiary Level: University and Community College

Lecturers at UWI Mona, UTech, NCU, and community colleges are paid on separate academic salary scales:

• Assistant Lecturer: J$2.5M–J$4M
• Lecturer: J$3.5M–J$5.5M
• Senior Lecturer: J$5M–J$8M
• Professor: J$7M–J$12M

Why Jamaican Teachers Leave

The salary comparison with the UK is stark. A newly qualified teacher in the UK earns approximately £31,000 (around J$6M) in the most affordable regions — nearly three times a newly trained Jamaican teacher’s salary. The UK, USA, and Canada have all been actively recruiting Jamaican teachers, with many leaving for overseas positions each year. The Ministry of Education has introduced retention incentives, but the salary gap remains the primary driver of emigration.

Qualification Pathways

To teach in a Jamaican government school, you must hold a recognised teaching qualification — either a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or a first degree in a relevant subject plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). Teaching Council of Jamaica registration is required before employment. A minimum of five CXC subjects including English Language is required for teacher training admission.
