What is a Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist?
A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) — also referred to as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Biomedical Scientist — is a healthcare professional qualified to perform complex diagnostic laboratory tests on patient blood, urine, tissue, and other specimens. These tests underpin diagnosis of infectious diseases, anaemia, diabetes, cancer, and virtually every other clinical condition managed in Jamaican hospitals and clinics.
Registration with the Allied Health Council of Jamaica (AHCJ) is a legal requirement to work as an MLS in any Jamaican clinical setting. The AHCJ oversees standards of practice, professional conduct, and continuing education for all allied health practitioners in Jamaica, including MLS professionals.
Jamaica faces a significant and growing shortage of registered MLS. This challenge was starkly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic when laboratory testing capacity became a national health security issue. The Ministry of Health has identified MLS recruitment and retention as a priority. UTech Jamaica’s Faculty of Health Sciences at Papine, Kingston offers the BSc Medical Laboratory Science that is the most common local training pathway. UWI Mona and approved overseas institutions also provide qualifying degrees.

How to Become a Registered MLS in Jamaica
Enrol in the 4-year BSc MLS programme at UTech Jamaica (Faculty of Health Sciences, Papine, Kingston), UWI Mona, or an AHCJ-approved overseas institution. The programme includes extensive clinical placement in hospital laboratories.
Final-year and post-graduation supervised clinical hours in approved Jamaican or overseas laboratories are required to meet AHCJ registration standards.
Submit your degree certificate, clinical placement records, and application to the Allied Health Council of Jamaica. The AHCJ will assess your qualifications against registration criteria.
Applicants with overseas qualifications may be required to sit additional competency assessments to confirm equivalence to Jamaican registration standards.
AHCJ-registered MLS must complete annual continuing professional development activities and renew their registration periodically to remain in good standing.
CPD & Renewal
The AHCJ requires all registered allied health practitioners, including MLS, to maintain ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) as a condition of registration renewal. Approved CPD activities include conferences, workshops, online learning modules, and peer-reviewed study. Jamaican MLS are encouraged to engage with the Jamaica Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists and regional bodies including the Caribbean Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (CAMLS).
