Will AI Take Jamaican Jobs? What the Evidence Actually Shows in 2026

You have heard the headline: artificial intelligence is coming for half the world’s jobs. It is repeated confidently, often by people with something to sell, and it is causing real anxiety in Jamaican workplaces — particularly in the BPO sector.
The anxiety deserves a serious answer rather than either dismissal or amplification. Here is what the evidence actually says.
What has actually happened so far
Start with the measurable rather than the predicted.
Jamaica’s unemployment rate is near a historic low. STATIN recorded 3.3% in April 2025 — the lowest on record — and 3.7% in April 2026, with the increase attributed to Hurricane Melissa’s disruption in the western parishes rather than to technology. For context, the rate was 16.5% in 1997.
Jamaica is closer to a labour shortage than a labour surplus. The Prime Minister has cited approximately 739,000 Jamaicans outside the labour force, including around 150,000 unattached youth, as a constraint on business output.
On BPO specifically: in June 2026, industry leaders publicly stated that despite three years of political warnings about AI wiping out the sector, not a single Jamaican BPO job had actually been lost to AI. The sector employs more than 50,000 people across Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, Montego Bay and Mandeville.
Internationally, measured AI-driven displacement sits at roughly 0.6% of employment across the studies tracking it — not zero, but nowhere near the headline figures.
The boomerang nobody mentions
Some large companies did rush to replace workers with AI. Many have reversed course.
A 2026 Robert Half study found nearly three in ten companies that laid off workers after adopting AI have already rehired. Forrester found that more than half of employers who made AI-driven layoffs regret the decision, and one in three spent more on rehiring and retraining than they saved.
The most-cited example is Klarna, the Swedish payments company, which replaced around 700 customer service agents with an AI chatbot, publicised the savings, then quietly began bringing people back when complaints rose and service quality fell.
What the forecasts really say
The “92 million jobs displaced” figure comes from the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report. It is usually quoted without its other half: the same report projects 170 million new roles over the same period — a net gain of 78 million globally.
Forecasts vary enormously, which itself tells you something:

Across 29 tracked sources, projections range from 0% to 18%, with a median around 6%. That spread is not precision — it reflects genuine disagreement about adoption speed and whether new demand offsets displacement.
The economists’ consensus is that sustained mass unemployment from AI is unlikely, but that transitional disruption for specific occupational groups is very likely. Both things are true at once.
Jamaica’s actual AI capacity
Here is the part that should calm the immediate panic and worry you about the medium term simultaneously.
The UNESCO-framework readiness assessment, led through the Office of the Prime Minister, found that Jamaica has no dedicated AI budget line, no national count of AI-displaced workers, and private sector AI adoption still mostly at pilot stage. Jamaica’s entire AI research output over five years amounted to 13 published papers and zero patents.
The UWI SALISES Public AI Readiness Study, surveying over a thousand Jamaicans in 2026, scored the country 60 out of 100 — “developing and transitioning.” Awareness is high, informal use is common, formal training is low, and the ability to benefit is unevenly spread.
That is not the profile of a country about to automate its workforce out of existence. It is the profile of a country that could be left behind.
Which work is genuinely exposed
Exposure is not the same as replacement, but some patterns are consistent across the research:
- Routine clerical and keyboard work — data entry, filing, basic scheduling, document processing.
- Scripted customer interactions — the routine end of call handling, complaint classification, first-line queries.
- Routine cognitive tasks — standard report generation, basic summarising, simple research compilation.
- Entry-level tasks generally, across many fields, which has implications for how people get their first foothold.
UTech research indicates that AI-enabled automation disproportionately threatens female-dominated occupations including clerical roles and call centre work. Jamaica’s BPO sector was built substantially on the labour of young Jamaican women, which makes this a gendered issue as much as a technological one.
Conversely, economists surveyed expect employment growth in personal service and care work, health professions, and roles requiring physical presence, human judgement or trust — precisely the work that is hardest to automate.
What Jamaica has that AI does not replace
Jamaica’s BPO sector does not compete purely on cost — cheaper alternatives exist elsewhere. It competes on English fluency, cultural proximity to North American markets, and the quality of human interaction.
AI can handle a routine query. What it handles poorly is the frustrated customer whose situation falls outside any script, the judgement call in a high-stakes complaint, the cultural fluency that makes a difficult conversation feel human. Those are the things clients are actually paying Jamaican centres for.
The Minister of State with responsibility for the sector has framed the shift as AI automating routine interactions while elevating the importance of human judgement, complex problem-solving and trust-building. Industry leaders have gone further, arguing that providers treating AI as a bolt-on rather than a core capability will struggle to compete.
The real risk
The danger for Jamaica is not a sudden flood of robots emptying offices. It is a slower, quieter divide: some workers learn to work alongside AI and move up, while others are left behind — not because AI replaced them, but because nobody prepared them.
That is a different problem from the one in the headlines, and it has a different solution. Panic is not useful. Preparation is.
What this means for your career decisions
- Do not abandon a sector that is hiring. BPO employs 50,000+ Jamaicans and has lost no jobs to AI. Leaving a stable job on the basis of a headline is a bigger risk than staying.
- Do assume your role will change. The tasks that make up your job will shift even if the job survives.
- Move toward judgement, not away from technology. The defensible position is not “AI can’t do my job” — it is being the person who uses AI well and handles what it cannot.
- Take the free training while it is free. HEART/NSTA tuition is now removed up to Level Five. That is an unusual window.
- Watch the entry level. If you are starting out, the tasks traditionally given to juniors are the most exposed. Build something beyond them early.
