How to Get Your TRN and NIS Number in Jamaica: Step-by-Step

Last verified: 23 July 2026. Based on Tax Administration Jamaica’s published requirements. Requirements and forms change — confirm with TAJ (888-TAX-HELP / jamaicatax.gov.jm) or the NIS before travelling to an office.

You cannot be paid properly in Jamaica without a TRN, and you cannot build any social security entitlement without an NIS number. Both are straightforward to obtain, but applications get turned away over document details — so get those right the first time.

What the TRN is

The Taxpayer Registration Number is a unique nine-digit number assigned to each individual and organisation. You need it to transact with government bodies, banks, schools, examination boards and employers.

Anyone can apply, including non-Jamaicans and non-residents. It is free.

One thing worth knowing: the TRN card is not valid identification, as it carries no photograph. You will still need a driver’s licence, passport or elector ID for identification purposes.

Applying for a TRN — individuals in Jamaica

Step 1: Get the form

Download Form 1: Application for Taxpayer Registration (Individuals) from jamaicatax.gov.jm, or collect it at any Tax Office. You can also complete the application online through the TAJ web portal, then print and sign it.

Step 2: Assemble your identification

This is where applications fail. Only original or certified copies are accepted.

  • National ID / Elector ID — must be accompanied by your birth certificate
  • Work ID, school ID, or a professionally produced certified passport-size photograph — again, must be used together with your birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate or deed poll, if your name has changed

Self-employed applicants also need their NIS card, and a Business Name Registration Certificate if trading under a name different from their own.

Step 3: Get photographs certified if you are using them

Photographs must be certified by one of: a Justice of the Peace, Minister of Religion or Marriage Officer, Judge or Resident Magistrate, Attorney-at-Law, Member of Parliament, Parish Councillor, Medical Doctor, School Principal, Civil Servant (SEG3 or above), or a Police Officer at the rank of Inspector or above.

A certified photograph must be accompanied by a Declaration from the certifying official. That blank declaration form is available from your local Tax Office or the TAJ website. People routinely forget this and get sent away.

Step 4: Submit

Take the completed, signed form and your documents to the nearest Tax Office, or to the Taxpayer Registration Centre, 116 East Street, Kingston (876-924-9280/1).

Applying for a TRN from overseas

You cannot apply on someone else’s behalf. The applicant must apply personally, by one of two routes:

  1. Create a login on the TAJ website, select “apply for TRN,” complete the web application, then print, sign and mail it; or
  2. Download the form, complete and sign it, and mail it.

Either way, enclose a copy of your passport or driver’s licence notarised by a Notary Public. The document must show your full name, date of birth, photograph and signature — and the signature on your application must match it.

If your documents are not in English, an official translation is required. If someone else will collect the card in Jamaica, include an authorisation letter naming them. Otherwise cards are mailed to the address on the application.

Mail to: Taxpayer Registration Centre, Tax Administration Jamaica, 116 East Street, Kingston, Jamaica.

The NIS number

The National Insurance Scheme is Jamaica’s compulsory contributory social security system, administered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security under the National Insurance Act. Registration is compulsory for people aged 18 to 70 in insurable employment — employees, self-employed people and voluntary contributors.

Contributing builds entitlement to retirement pension, invalidity benefit, employment injury benefit, maternity allowance, survivors’ benefits and health coverage for pensioners.

To register, apply through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. You will generally need identification, your birth certificate, your TRN and proof of employment or self-employment. Confirm the current requirements with the Ministry before going in — the NIS office can tell you exactly what to bring.

Which to get first

Get the TRN first in most cases. It is needed for a wide range of transactions and is generally requested for NIS registration. The exception is self-employed TRN applicants, who need an NIS card as part of the TRN application — if that is you, contact both offices to sequence it correctly.

Protecting these numbers

Your TRN and NIS number are valuable to identity thieves. Give them to a legitimate employer once you have a genuine job offer and are completing employment paperwork — not to a “recruiter” who contacted you on WhatsApp, and not in response to a social media job post.

A real employer will ask for these as part of formal onboarding, alongside a written offer or contract. Anyone asking earlier, or by an informal channel, deserves scrutiny.

Practical notes

  • Apply before you need it. Scrambling for a TRN after accepting a job delays your first payslip.
  • Check every document against the list before travelling to an office.
  • Keep your NIS contribution record. Your pension depends on it, and gaps are easier to correct now than decades later.
  • Update your details when you move or change your name.
  • Photograph or scan both cards and store the images securely, so a lost card is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

This article is general information. Requirements are set by Tax Administration Jamaica and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and may change — confirm current requirements directly before applying.
