The Route to Becoming a Lawyer in Jamaica
The pathway to legal practice in Jamaica is structured and regulated:
- Step 1: LLB (Bachelor of Laws) – The undergraduate law degree. Available at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Norman Manley Law School feeder programme, as well as international universities. The UWI Faculty of Law at Cave Hill, Barbados is the most common regional entry point for Jamaicans who complete their undergraduate studies externally.
- Step 2: Legal Education Certificate (LEC) – The Council of Legal Education’s professional qualification, studied at the Norman Manley Law School in Kingston. This is the stage that qualifies candidates for practice in Jamaica and most CARICOM jurisdictions. The LEC is highly competitive — places are limited and entry is based on LLB grades.
