The HEART/NSTA Trust (Human Employment and Resource Training / National Service Training Agency) is Jamaica’s primary vocational training authority. With over 100 training institutions and programmes across the island, it provides an alternative route to employment for thousands of Jamaicans who do not pursue university degrees. But with so many courses available, which ones actually lead to well-paying, in-demand jobs?

How HEART Certification Works

HEART programmes lead to National Vocational Qualifications of Jamaica (NVQJs) at levels 1 through 5, aligned with the CARICOM Qualifications Framework. Level 2 and 3 qualifications are the most common entry points for employment; level 4 and 5 qualifications are equivalent to technical diploma and degree level. Most programmes last 6–24 months, are heavily subsidised by the government, and include practical work placements.

Electrical Installation (NVQJ Level 2–3)

Electricians are among the highest-earning tradespeople in Jamaica, with experienced workers earning J$1M–J$3.2M annually. HEART-certified electricians can apply for JPS and private sector roles immediately after qualification. The course covers residential and commercial wiring, load calculations, and safety standards. Many graduates move into self-employment within a few years.

Plumbing and Pipefitting (NVQJ Level 2–3)

Plumbers are in consistent demand across residential construction, hotel refurbishment, and commercial fit-out projects. The HEART plumbing programme covers pipe systems, drainage, water supply, and gas installations. Certified graduates typically start at J$900K–J$1.4M and can earn significantly more in self-employment or on large construction contracts.

HVAC Technician (NVQJ Level 2–3)

Air conditioning and refrigeration technicians are heavily in demand in Jamaica’s hotel, commercial, and residential sectors. The HEART HVAC programme covers refrigeration systems, split units, central air conditioning, and preventive maintenance. This is one of the faster pathways to self-employment, as many graduates establish small maintenance businesses.

Cosmetology and Beauty Therapy (NVQJ Level 2)

One of the most popular HEART programmes, cosmetology leads to employment in salons, spas, hotels, and cruise ship concessions. Jamaica’s tourism sector creates consistent demand for trained beauty therapists. Many graduates build client lists and transition to self-employment within two to three years of certification.

Culinary Arts (NVQJ Level 2–3)

Jamaica’s hospitality sector employs thousands of cooks and chefs across hotels, restaurants, and catering companies. HEART’s culinary programmes at institutions including the Runaway Bay HEART Hotel and Training Institute are highly regarded by employers. Graduates can progress to commis chef, chef de partie, and eventually sous chef or head chef positions.

IT and Computer Operations (NVQJ Level 2–3)

HEART’s IT programmes — covering hardware support, networking, and software applications — provide an entry point into BPO technical support roles, government IT departments, and private sector helpdesk positions. Combined with industry certifications (CompTIA A+, Google IT Support), HEART IT graduates are competitive candidates.

Motor Vehicle Mechanics (NVQJ Level 2–3)

Automotive technicians are in consistent demand across dealerships, garages, and fleet operators. The HEART automotive programme covers engine systems, diagnostics, electrical systems, and body repair. Dealers often recruit directly from HEART institutions and provide on-the-job advancement to senior technician grades.

Construction Trades (Masonry, Carpentry, Tiling)

Jamaica’s construction boom has elevated demand for skilled construction tradespeople. HEART masonry, carpentry, and tiling programmes produce graduates who can enter the market at competitive wages. Experienced masons and carpenters with HEART certification can earn J$1.5M–J$2.5M+ annually on commercial projects.

How to Enrol

Applications to HEART/NSTA Trust programmes are made directly to individual training institutions or through the central HEART/NSTA Trust website. Most programmes require a minimum of two CXC subjects or an entrance assessment. Fees are subsidised and some courses are fully funded for school leavers under government employment initiatives.

Upgrading Your HEART Qualification

HEART Level 3 and 4 qualifications can be used as pathways into degree programmes at UTech, UWI, and Northern Caribbean University through articulation agreements.
