Attorney-at-Law (Jamaica)
The foundational licence of Jamaica’s fused legal profession — governed by the General Legal Council and earned through the LLB and Legal Education Certificate pathway at Norman Manley Law School.
What Is an Attorney-at-Law in Jamaica?
In Jamaica, the title Attorney-at-Law is the sole designation for a qualified legal practitioner. Unlike some jurisdictions that distinguish between barristers and solicitors, Jamaica operates a fused profession — a single Attorney-at-Law can appear in court, draft legal documents, advise clients, handle conveyancing, and manage corporate transactions under one licence.
The profession is regulated by the General Legal Council (GLC) under the Legal Profession Act. Qualification requires an LLB degree followed by the two-year Legal Education Certificate (LEC) programme at Norman Manley Law School — the only institution in Jamaica authorised to award the LEC. Candidates are called to the Bar by the Supreme Court of Jamaica after passing the Bar examinations.
