What is the CPA Designation?

The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the primary professional accounting licence in the United States, overseen by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and administered through individual state boards of accountancy. It is widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious accounting qualification in US-aligned markets and is essential for public accounting, US audit, and US tax work. In Jamaica, the CPA is highly valued in Big 4 firms, BPO companies servicing US clients, financial institutions with US operations, and among professionals planning to work or invest in the United States. It is frequently pursued alongside ACCA as an internationalisation strategy.

Why CPA Matters in Jamaica

Jamaica’s large US-aligned diaspora and the BPO sector’s extensive US client base create strong demand for CPA-qualified accountants. Big 4 firms in Jamaica — PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, and EY — value CPA holders for US advisory and audit engagements. Many Jamaican finance professionals pursue CPA as a career internationalisation strategy: it opens doors to US employment, USD-denominated remote work, and international secondments. The CPA’s 2024 Evolution restructure has streamlined the exam while maintaining its rigour and global currency.

How to Obtain Your CPA

1
Complete 150 Credit Hours of Education
A UWI bachelor’s degree typically provides 120 credits. You will need to supplement with additional courses (online or a master’s degree) to reach the 150-credit-hour requirement. NASBA evaluates international credentials.
2
Choose a US State to License In
States like Colorado, Montana, and New Hampshire have international-candidate-friendly requirements with no US residency requirement. Research which state board best suits your situation before applying.
3
Apply for Exam Eligibility
Submit your academic transcripts (evaluated by a NASBA-recognised agency for international credentials) to your chosen state board and receive your Notice to Schedule (NTS).
4
Pass All 4 CPA Exam Sections
Under the 2024 CPA Evolution, pass AUD, FAR, REG (core sections) plus one of BAR, TCP, or ISC (discipline sections). Sections are sat at Prometric centres — Caribbean testing centres are available. Complete all within the rolling window.
5
Complete 1–2 Years of Supervised Experience
Work under a licensed CPA in a qualifying role. Some states accept experience in Jamaica if it is verified by a licensed CPA. Requirements vary by state board.
6
Apply for Licensure & Maintain Annual CPE
Apply for your CPA licence with your state board. Maintain typically 40 CPE hours per year through online providers — easily manageable from Jamaica — and pay annual renewal fees.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPE requirements vary by state — typically 40 hours per year or 120 hours per 3-year reporting period, with ethics CPE requirements in most states. The major advantage for Jamaica-based CPAs is that virtually all CPE can be completed online through AICPA-approved providers, making it straightforward to maintain licensure without travelling to the United States. ICAJ joint events with AICPA affiliates may also count toward CPE requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CPA or ACCA better for a career in Jamaica?
Both are highly respected. ACCA has greater recognition among Jamaican employers across all sectors and is the more common starting point for local accounting careers. CPA is preferred for US-facing roles, Big 4 US client work, and international career plans. Many senior Jamaican finance professionals hold both qualifications, and the combination is increasingly common at CFO and partner level.
Can I take the CPA exam from Jamaica?
Since 2020, the CPA exam has been available at international Prometric testing locations including sites in the Caribbean region. Jamaican candidates can sit exams without travelling to the United States, although the nearest international Prometric centre may vary — check the Prometric website for current Caribbean locations.
Do I need a US degree?
No. A Jamaican degree from UWI or another accredited institution can be accepted, but your academic credits must be evaluated by a NASBA-recognised credential evaluation agency (such as NASBA International Evaluation Services or World Education Services) and must meet the 150-credit-hour requirement, which often means supplementary study is required.
