Role Overview

Private dentists in Jamaica provide general and specialist dental care — fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, braces, implants and cosmetic dentistry (teeth whitening, veneers). They work in private practices, dental centres, and increasingly in tele-dentistry and corporate dental programmes. This is distinct from the Government Dentist role in the public health system.

Qualifications & Licensing

A BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) or DDS/DMD from a recognised university, followed by registration with the Dental Council of Jamaica, is required. Specialist registration requires a recognised postgraduate specialist qualification. UWI Mona has a Faculty of Medical Sciences but specialist dental training often takes Jamaican dentists abroad.
