Role Overview
The Hotel General Manager (GM) is the most senior operational leader of a hotel property. In Jamaica, GMs work across boutique guesthouses, business hotels, and large all-inclusive resorts in Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston. They are accountable for revenue, guest satisfaction, staff performance and brand standards.

Key Responsibilities
- Setting revenue targets and managing the hotel’s P&L
- Leading department heads (F&B, Rooms, Marketing, HR, Finance)
- Maintaining brand standards and guest satisfaction scores
- Liaising with owners, investors and corporate management
- Managing relationships with tour operators and travel agents
- Overseeing recruitment, training and performance management
Qualifications & Path
Most GMs have a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration or Tourism. The University of Technology Jamaica (UTech) and University of the West Indies (UWI) both offer relevant programmes. International certifications (CHA — Certified Hotel Administrator) are valued at larger properties. Career progression typically runs: Front Desk → Supervisor → Department Head → Deputy GM → GM. Most GMs have 8–15 years of hotel experience before reaching the top role.
