What is a Government Stenographer?

Government Stenographers (OPS/SW) provide specialist shorthand and transcription services within Jamaica’s civil service, particularly in the court system, Cabinet Secretariat and selected ministries. The three-grade series (SW 1–3) spans Pay Bands 6–7, reflecting the specialist skill premium attached to certified shorthand at speed.

Qualifications & Entry Requirements

  • Certified shorthand speed of 120–160 wpm (Pitman or Gregg)
  • Diploma in Secretarial Science or Stenography from an accredited institution
  • Typing speed of 60+ wpm
  • Court Reporting qualification advantageous; experience in a legal or government setting preferred
