What is a Probation & Aftercare Officer?

Probation and Aftercare Officers (SWG/PAO) work at the intersection of the criminal justice system and social welfare, supporting the rehabilitation of offenders through the courts, correctional services and community supervision programmes. Operating under the Ministry of National Security and Department of Correctional Services. The five-grade series (PAO 1–5) spans Pay Bands 7–11.

Qualifications & Entry Requirements

  • BSW or Degree in Criminology, Psychology or related field — PS 1 minimum
  • Registration with relevant professional council
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice (Administration) Act and Probation of Offenders Act
  • Valid driver’s licence often required for community supervision duties
