What is a Social Worker (Government) in Jamaica’s Civil Service?
Professional Social Workers in Jamaica’s civil service (SWG/PS) deliver frontline child protection, family welfare and community development services through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) and community health centres. The series runs from PS 1 to PS 4 across Pay Bands 7–11. Entry requires a recognised social work degree; senior grades carry supervisory responsibility for case teams and input into national social policy. This is a demanding but deeply impactful career in public service.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducting social assessments of children, families and individuals at risk
- Investigating reports of child abuse, neglect and domestic violence
- Preparing court reports and giving evidence in family and criminal courts
- Coordinating care plans and placements for vulnerable children
- Providing counselling and support to families in crisis
- Liaising with schools, hospitals, police and NGOs on case management
- Supervising foster care placements and children’s home visits
- Preparing case notes, monthly reports and statistical returns
Qualifications & Entry Requirements
- Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from an accredited institution — minimum requirement for PS 1
- Registration with the Jamaica Council of Professions (Social Work Council) required
- Master of Social Work (MSW) advantageous at PS 3–4
- Child protection certification and safeguarding training
- Experience in community social work, NGOs or government agencies valued
