Why FRM Matters in Jamaica
Jamaica’s financial sector has undergone significant regulatory transformation since the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) strengthened its enterprise risk management framework requirements for all licensed deposit-taking institutions (DTIs). The BOJ now expects commercial banks, building societies, and licensed financial institutions to demonstrate robust, internationally-recognised risk management practices — and the FRM is the credential that satisfies that expectation at the highest level.
Jamaica’s major commercial banks — NCB Financial Group, Scotiabank Jamaica, and JN Bank — alongside insurance conglomerates like Sagicor Financial Corporation and investment houses like JMMB Group, have formalised their preference for FRM-certified professionals in risk leadership positions. Chief Risk Officers, Heads of Credit Risk, and Senior Market Risk Analysts at these institutions frequently hold the FRM designation, and it has become effectively a prerequisite for advancement into the C-suite of any Jamaican financial institution.
With the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) growing in sophistication — introducing derivatives trading and expanding its junior market — and local capital markets deepening, demand for derivatives pricing expertise, Basel III/IV compliance knowledge, and stress-testing capability is rising sharply. The FRM provides all of these competencies within a single internationally portable credential that is respected in 190 countries.
The Development Bank of Jamaica and the Caribbean Development Bank also recruit FRM holders for their portfolio risk and project finance functions, creating significant career pathways beyond commercial banking for Jamaican risk professionals.

How to Obtain Your FRM — Step by Step
Create an account at garp.org and register for the FRM Program. You can register for Part I and Part II simultaneously or sequentially. Early registration fees are lower — plan at least 4 months ahead of your target exam window. Exams are offered each May and November at Pearson VUE centres in Kingston and Montego Bay.
Part I covers four areas: Foundations of Risk Management, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Markets & Products, and Valuation & Risk Models. GARP recommends 200–240 study hours. Popular resources include GARP’s official curriculum, Schweser FRM Notes, and Bionic Turtle practice questions. Many Jamaican candidates form study groups through local CFA/GARP chapter networks.
100 multiple-choice questions over 4 hours. Global pass rates hover around 45–50%. A detailed score report is available immediately after the computer-based exam. If unsuccessful, you may retake in the next available window — there is no limit on retakes.
Part II goes deep into Market Risk Measurement & Management, Credit Risk, Operational and Liquidity Risk, Risk Management & Investment Management, and Current Financial Issues including fintech and climate risk. Plan 200–280 additional study hours. The material is more applied and technical than Part I.
80 multiple-choice questions over 4 hours. Global pass rates are approximately 55–60%. Part II must be passed within 4 years of passing Part I, otherwise Part I must be retaken.
Experience must be in a financial risk role — credit risk, market risk, operational risk, treasury, risk technology, or related function. Crucially, this runs concurrently with your studies, so most working professionals in Jamaica’s financial sector complete this step naturally. Experience must be verifiable by your employer.
Once both exams are passed and your 2 years of experience are complete, submit your attestation via the GARP Member Portal. GARP reviews submissions within 4–6 weeks and issues your official FRM certificate by post. You are then fully certified and may use the FRM designation on your business card, LinkedIn profile, and CV.
Maintaining Your FRM — CPD Requirements
FRM certification is a continuing commitment. GARP requires 40 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours every 2 years to maintain active certified status. Activities that qualify include:
- Attending GARP-approved risk management conferences and webinars (including virtual events accessible from Jamaica)
- Completing risk-related professional training and online courses
- Publishing risk management research, articles, or white papers
- Serving as a mentor, instructor, or speaker in a risk management context
- Completing relevant academic courses at accredited universities
- Participating in GARP Caribbean chapter events hosted periodically in Kingston
CPD hours are logged via the GARP Member Portal. Failure to meet requirements results in suspended certification until hours are reported and verified. GARP provides automated reminders as renewal deadlines approach.
